10-year-old Melvin, Oklahoma, 1926. Melvin sees a photo in his fourth-grade geography book of a cabin in the Alaska wilderness. The photo sparks his dream
of living in the north country.

Melvin and Cecil, Oklahoma, 1941. Melvin marries Cecil Marie in 1940, who shares his Alaska dream.

Camping in British Columbia during the family's first driving trip to Alaska the summer of 1961.

Immediately following the 1961 trip to Alaska, Melvin builds the first boat he hopes to take to Alaska. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the completed boat is sold to a Texas fisherman and subsequently destroyed
by a barge during a hurricane.

Soon after returning home from their 1968 trip, Melvin begins construction of the second boat he hopes to take to Alaska, the Red Dog.
